Hoi An Ancient Town

Far from Da Nang city about 30 km in the Southeast, Hoi An Ancient Town was an international trade central on the West- East commercial journey from the end of century XVI.  Hoi An was also the richest trading port of Viet Nam at that time because there are many merchant ships from Japan, China, Portugal, Spain and Netherlands…usually came here to exchange and to do business. Hoi An Ancient Town nearly preserved status quo of architectural works including house, pagoda, house of worship, well, bridge, port, market, street…The scenery of Hoi An likes an live picture.

Japanese Covered Bridge is the invaluable possession which chosen to be symbol of Hoi An Ancient Town. This bridge is the architectural work of Japanese traders who came here to do business and built it in the middle of century XVI. It rebuilt many times because of flood so it gradually lost the Japanese architecture.  This wooden bridge curves at the center and it joins two branch banks of Hoai River. The bridge roof is curved and carved many skilful vignettes. There is small temple where worship the genie of protecting people from flood according to Chinese’s belief. There are statues of monkey and dog at both sides of Japanese Covered Bridge. The origin of this bridge connect with legend about a sea monster which has head in India, body in Viet Nam and tail in Japan; therefore it will be flood or earthquake whenever this sea monster moves. So they built this bridge not only service for traffic but also guard the peaceful life to people here. 

With more than 100 years old, Phung Hung old house in Hoi An Ancient Town has original composition with high wooden attic and large lobby around. This house is filled information of life style of trader classes in Hoi An trading port. Even though building from unusual materials, Phung Hung old house wasn’t sophisticatedly carved.

Legend has it that the predecessor of Phuc Kien assembly hall is small temple worshiped statue of genie that protect traders overcome storm of ocean; this statue fished out of Hoi An sea in 1697. Through many restoring with main contributing of community of Chinese nationals from Fu Kien, this assembly hall was more and more spacious. Annually, there are many ceremonies which interest domestic travelers as well as foreigners joining on the fifteenth of first lunar month, 16th lunar February and 23th lunar March…
